Data Residency

Data residency is an obligatory feature to integrate any tool in a company. So far this was a critical topic for Atlassian on which they have been working to bring the safest solution to its clientele.

Atlassian has announced that in addition to its enterprise plan it will include data residency in Standard and Premium Cloud plans. Currently, only enterprise products have in-scope data hosted in the EU and US realms. Atlassian is working on bringing data residency to all of its cloud products later this year.

What exactly is data residency?

Data residency similar to data sovereignty refers to the physical location where an organization's data or information is stored. Data residency allows organization administrators to view where your Jira Software, Jira Service Management, and Confluence data or in-scope product content is hosted.

Why is data residency a necessity?

This new feature allows us as Atlassian Enterprise Solution Partner to provide a seamless turnkey experience for our customers. Giving them the power to choose where their cloud products are hosted, with the highest standards of security.

The lack of this attribute prevented many businesses from moving to the cloud. Fortunately, Atlassian has taken steps to resolve this pain point and has decided not to add any extra costs to this feature. Control over data residency will be included in Standard and Premium Cloud plans later this year.

How to check where your data is hosted?

To see where your data is hosted:

  1. Select the name of your organization at admin.atlassian.com to access your organization’s  Administration overview.
  2. Go to Security Data residency
  3. In the data residency table, see the Realm and Location columns.

Data residency roadmap

Atlassian has developed a powerful roadmap for data residency to soon offer additional geographic locations and include more types of customer data. These new features will be available to customers with Cloud subscriptions only.

Take a look at Atlassian's Data Residency roadmap here and find out about the latest details on additional geographies, timing on availability, and expanded data types.

Data Residency for Marketplace apps

Atlassian currently doesn't does not include Atlassian Marketplace apps and their data because the Atlassian Marketplace is comprised primarily of third-party app vendors. These vendors are not a part of Atlassian resulting in data stored outside of the Atlassian network and independent of Atlassian's Data Residency control. There are, however, plans on the roadmap to changes this as well and offer Data Residency for Marketplace apps, too.

Where can you store your Data?

Customers on the enterprise plan can freely manage their data and move it between realms. So far, standard and premium customers can only view where their data is hosted. In the next couple of months, customers on standard and premium plan will also be able to choose where to move their data.
